Problem:
Washing machine making loud noises at beginning of wash cycle; before
the washer goes into the wash cycle, it fills up with the water, and starts making a loud noise, sounding
like all gears are going to fall out. It also makes a lot of clunking noises
during the wash cycle, but after that it doesn't make another sound and runs
beautifully.
Solution:
On older Hotpoint washing machines there is a clutch that mounts to the top of the motor. When this happens it is usually because the
clutch is worn out. The noises you hear are the inner workings of that clutch
assembly when it starts up.
You can have another clutch assembly installed but it is a costly repair and may not be worth it. It may make more sense to spend the money towards purchasing a new washing machine.
